Why Visit Newport

Newport's identity is tied to its maritime past, seen in the Historic Bayfront's working fishing fleet. The iconic 1936 Yaquina Bay Bridge, an Art Deco masterpiece by Conde McCullough, defines the skyline. Nearby, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Oregon's tallest, has guided ships since 1873. This functional, coastal architecture reflects a history built on timber and fishing, which remains the city's pulse.

Visiting Newport means engaging with the dramatic Oregon coast. Explore tide pools at Yaquina Head, teeming with sea stars and anemones. From December to May, witness the gray whale migration, with over 20,000 whales passing by. Hunt for agates after a storm or watch the resident sea lion colony on the bayfront-a constant, noisy spectacle.

The local cuisine is a direct taste of the Pacific. Enjoy Dungeness crab bought straight from the docks or try Yaquina Bay oysters, known for their unique flavor. Most bayfront restaurants source their catch daily, offering unparalleled freshness. Don't miss the local breweries, like the famous Rogue Ales, which started right here and infuses the town's character into its craft beers.

Incredible Architecture

The Gilded Age mansions are the main draw and they absolutely deliver. Touring The Breakers felt like walking through a palace. The level of detail and opulence is just incredible. The whole Bellevue Avenue historic district is worth exploring.

Stunning Coastal Walk

The Cliff Walk is a must-do. The combination of the rugged coastline on one side and the massive Gilded Age mansions on the other is just breathtaking. We went on a clear, crisp day and the views were endless. Be sure to wear good shoes!

Cozy and Historic

Visited in the off-season and it was so peaceful. The historic streets are really nice to wander through without the crowds. Found a great pub for some clam chowder. It's a different, more relaxed side of the city that we really enjoyed.
